An integrated
approach to learning

Studies in child development have shown that children learn best when they use multiple senses and skills simultaneously. Therefore, at Sunnyside, we use an integrated curriculum. Different subject areas such as language, science, social studies, and art are introduced and explored naturally following the children’s interests and developmental level.

An emphasis on the development of
literacy skills

Our experienced educators know firsthand that small children can learn to read and write by the time they complete kindergarten.

Sunnyside’s unique phonics and literacy program enables native English students to achieve a reading level equal to or above that of a child entering second grade, and even non-native students can achieve a reading level equal to or above that of a child entering first grade in the United States.

A combination of the world’s most highly esteemed
approaches to early education

Although there are many established approaches to early childhood education, our professional educators realize that no singular method perfectly meets the developmental needs of all children. At Sunnyside we embrace the core values of three of the most widely respected educational philosophies for young learners, and recognize the potential of small children to excel in literacy from an early age.

1. Reggio Emilia Approach

which emphasizes the role of families in a child’s education, positing that children learn through “One Hundred Languages”-countless forms of self-expression-and are capable of constructing their own learning through a stimulating environment.

2. Montessori Method

which strives for the development of the whole child – emotional, intellectual, physical, and social – by “addressing the uniqueness of each child in a nurturing, emotionally secure and academically excellent environment”.

3. Literacy Learning

encompasses both reading and writing skills, which become invaluable communication tools for young children. Our unique program enables students to achieve a level equal to a child entering first grade internationally.

Nursery School License

Sunnyside International Kindergarten is a private childcare facility under the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Children can get the best of both international school and nursery school practices.

Sunnyside International Kindergarten accepts children regardless of parents’ work situation. Please consult us for more information about the admission process and see our facilities for yourself.

At Sunnyside, we provide high-quality early education in English to all our students, regardless of native language or national origin. Highlights of our program include a four-year English immersion preschool / kindergarten course with optional morning and after-school care designed to simultaneously educate and care for young children.

After- school classes in various subjects are offered daily and supplement our core preschool / kindergarten curriculum. All programs are available to native and non-native speakers; however, instruction is conducted only in English, facilitating students’ acquisition of important communication skills.

At Sunnyside, we care about your child’s health. That’s why we offer meals specially crafted by a child nutrionist.

Our lunches – made to order daily and designed to be well-balanced to meet a growing child’s needs – include organic ingredients and fresh, seasonal vegetables. The contents of each day’s lunch are detailed in a take-home menu, allowing parents to monitor their child’s diet.

Morning Snacks

As part of our adherence to the Reggio Emilia Approach, we offer delicious and nutritious snacks like fruits and vegetables every morning.

Our teachers prepare a snack plate with a variety of options and allow the children to choose what they would like to eat.
Students are encouraged to consider the needs of others, helping them to learn the values of sharing and not wasting food from an early age.
