Hello everyone, Sunnyside just finished our three-week summer session for this school year!
The overall theme of our seasonal program was about traveling in the past and learning about the different cultures and experiences of the people who lived before us.
As always, we had many visiting students who participated in our summer program. They loved getting to know our regular Sunnyside students and making new friends during the summer period.
We would like to share with you snippets of each week to help you visualize the many activities we had.
Week 1: Old Japan
Day 2: In our morning circle, we had Shodou (Japanese Calligraphy), Fude (Calligraphy brush), and Hanshi (calligraphy paper) in our magic vocabulary bag. The children had fun with a Kanji matching game. For our craft session, we each picked a Kanji character to write and drew a picture of it to put on a scroll.
Day 3: In the afternoon, the children enjoyed games of the English version of “Daruma San ga Koronda” and had fun with the Fukuwarai face game, where they enjoyed placing the pieces to create funny faces. At closing circle, we read the story of Kaguya Hime, the princess of the moon from Japanese folklore.
Day 4: In our morning circle, we had a Zen garden, Koi (Carp Fish), and Furin (Wind Chime) in our magic vocabulary bag. The children enjoyed a small fish relay race where they had to carry small toy fish on a spoon to the other side and place them in a bucket.
Week 2: Ancient Egypt
Day 1: Today, we traveled back in time to Ancient Egypt. During our morning circle, we discovered pyramids, hieroglyphics, and Egyptian collars in our magic vocabulary bag. The children learned that Ancient Egyptians had a unique language made up of pictures called hieroglyphics.
Day 3: In our craft session, we made clay models of the Nile River, painting it blue and adding our own little people, crocodiles, or hippopotamuses. In the afternoon, the children enjoyed fun games like a boat-pulling race and a water transport game to show how important water is for moving from one place to another.
Day 5: In the afternoon, the children enjoyed a fun game of musical freeze with a twist—they had to touch the Egyptian gods that were called out. They also engaged in a sensory play activity inspired by the gods of Egypt.
Week 3: The Wild West
Day 1: Today, we journeyed back in time to the Wild West. During circle time, we learned about cowboys, horseshoes, and bandanas for our vocabulary. We also started learning our cowboy song, “Little Old Cowboy,” and practiced our cowboy dance too.
Day 3: In the afternoon, the children enjoyed a fun game of “Coyote Howl,” where one child, blindfolded in the middle of a circle, had to guess who made the howl sound. We also played an exciting game of “Cattle Roundup,” where teams of children tried to gather as many balls (representing cattle) as they could.
Day 4: Today, we continued our journey back in time to the Wild West. During circle time, we learned about outlaws, Texas Rangers, and the Gold Rush for our vocabulary. The children found it fascinating that people discovered gold in California rivers!
We ended each week with water play and pool time! The weather has been wonderful each Friday so everyone had a dip into the water at the end of the week!
Until the next seasonal school! Hint: It is going to be cold that time 😉
